The grinding discs ใบเจียร are tools that help in shaping and smoothing the materials surface. But it is the bond type that will determine the performance of your grinding disc. The bond is not grains but the agent which holds the grains together and it plays a huge role in the grinding process whether the bond is meant for holding the grains together for a long time or allows the grains to be broken down so that new easy cutting edges are revealed. We will have an in depth look of the bond types for grinding discs, their characteristics, and the type of applications these are used for in this article.

    Why Bond Type Matters

    • The selection of bond type will to a large extent dictate how well a grinding disc performs and how long it lasts. What happens when you choose the wrong bond?
    • Premature Wear: A disk that’s too soft for the material being ground will wear very quickly, causing a shorter life of the disc.
    • Clogging: Abrasive grains may become dull and ineffective when the bond is too hard and this can lead to clogging.
    • Slow Cutting Speed: Utilizing the incorrect bond type can reduce the disc’s cutting efficiency, which can be the difference between a 30-minute and a 10-minute job.
    • Safety Hazard: In worst cases, an improper bond may lead to disc disintegration which is very unsafe.

    Types of Grinding Disc Bonds

    Vitrified Bond:

Construction:Constructed using ceramic clay and other compounds.

    • Attributes: Tough, stiff, and resistant to heat.
    • Applications: Suitable for precision grinding, high stock removal, and even where high heat resistance is required.

    Resinoid Bond:

    • Composition: Phenolic or epoxy, thermosetting synthetic resins.
    • Attributes: General-purpose buy, versatile/durable all-around, balanced strength/ply flexibility
    • Applications: Grinding steel, stainless steel, and other metal applications

    Rubber Bond:

    • Compound: Rubber, natural or synthetic
    • Characteristics: Ductile, shock resistant, and ideal for thin cut-off wheels and finishing operations.
    • Applications: For applications demanding tradework flexibility and reduced heat build up.

    Metal Bond:

    • Components: Constructed out of metals such as bronze, nickel, brass.
    • Characteristics: Very tough and long-lasting, immune to heat.
    • Applications: Master wheels are used to grind superalloys, carbides, and ceramics.

    Other Bond Types:

    • Shellac Bond: Specially made for grinding and polishing soft materials such as aluminum, brass, etc.
    • Oxychloride Bond : This bond imparts high strength and a great heat resistance, This is used for tools that are needed for cutting, processing and the manufacture is often done for a grinding wheel.
    • Silica Bond – Less common abrasive, good flexibility, for cutting

    Choosing the Right Bond Type

Most constituents of a bond are of four types.

    • Materials Being Ground: Normally harder materials require harder bonds and softer materials require softer bonds
    • Heavy Grinding: Heavy grinding requires a harder bond than a softer bond used for lighter finishing work.
    • Look at the desired finish: Softer bonds release the abrasive grains more easily, which is important with finer finishes.
    • BONDHarder bonds may be needed to deal with the higher forces at higher speeds.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Grinding Disc

    • Heed the Call From the Manufacturer: Consult the manufacturer’s specifications for the proper bond for your job.
    • Properly Store Discs: Preventing moisture damage and premature wear is simple-just store grinding discs in a cool, dry place.
    • IMPORTANT: VISUAL CHECK – Before using a disc on your grinder, check for any signs of cracks or chips.
    • Use correct methods: Use even pressure and do not abuse or over-pressure causing the tape to wear prematurely and damage.

    Conclusion

Working with the correct bond type of Grinding Discs is an integral part of ensuring you achieve the best performance and long life with as much safety as possible for grinding operations. With the proper selection of bond type for your grinding application and by practicing proper techniques, you can have a grinding operation that is flat, very stable, and will give you the results you desire. You have to keep in mind that the bond is the soul of any grinding disc, and make sure that you are fitting the best bond with your application.
